Happiness: Can you knowingly be happy?
Happiness, what is it? What one person views as happiness another may not. Happiness is
based on peoples personal perceptions and mindsets about happiness. Happiness is defined as: 1
the quality or state of being happy. 2 good fortune; pleasure; contentment; joy. These two
sentences are likely not how everyone would describe happiness, and really there is no right or
wrong definition or thoughts on happiness. Some believe happiness is a mindset, some theorize
that happiness is hereditary, some view happiness as an emotion that comes and goes, others
would say it’s a state of being. Some believe we get happiness from the things around us, while
others say happiness start from the inside. Happiness is something that scientist, psychologist,
religion / spirituality, and everyday people have all thought about and have tried to figure out.
There are certain characters associated with happiness regardless of culture, background,
and mindset; positive feelings, meaning in life, relationships, love, employment, religion,
health, and freedom. This is not to say that these are the only things that lead to happiness or that
everybody thinks of these things when considering what it means to be happy. Some say that you
don’t know if you’re happy unless you’ve been unhappy, several writers have reflected on the
phenomenon that we cease to being happy the instance we realize we’re happy. I believe that you
can know you’re happy, feel you are happy, be happy, and even share happiness.
Happiness should not have to rely on unhappiness, that’s like saying in order to feel full
you have to know what it is to be hungry, or to feel healthy you have to know illness, to know
sadness is to know joy first, or to recognize anger that doesn’t mean you were necessarily
peaceful before. You can know the sensation of being full even if you’ve never been hungry, the
difference is the person who has known hunger may value being full more and not take food for
granted. You can know what feeling healthy is without having to be sick first, because then you
could flip this statement and say that in order to be sick you have to be healthy first; but
everyone has not been born healthy and some struggle with their health and have never been or
felt healthy. In the context of other emotions, you can experience sadness even if you were not
previously joyous or content – your states of being and emotions are not invalid just because
you didn’t feel the counter emotion prior.
Anger does not lean on peace, its likely that the person experienced or felt another
negative emotion before anger was produced. Further, to counter the argument that “we cease to
being happy the instance we realize we’re happy.” Is like saying you stop being depressed the
moment you realize you are depressed, or you stop being angry, content, at peace, sad, etc.
How could we ever define happiness or speak of it if we didn’t “realize” happiness, how could
we feel happy and be happy if there was no recognition of our happiness or what it means for us
to experience happiness. The point is happiness does not solely exist on the basis of unhappiness,
  • nor does it fade away just because we reflect on it. If anything, I think we think too hard about
happiness, what it is, and how to obtain it vs actually acknowledging and reflecting when we are
happy and simply accepting that you are happy. I also notice that society will call you out for
being angry, comfort you when you’re sad, but how often do people blatantly address us when
we are happy? Not as often…
It’s also thought that to pursue happiness brings misery, but most people pursue
happiness – some find it, others create it, some let it come to them, some don’t focus on it and
then there are those who give up on it. But I don’t think that the process of finding happiness is a
one shoe fits all kind of thing. Happiness is so hard to define, understand, and categorize because
what makes people happy personally is unique to them. We cease to being happy the instance we
realize we’re happy, suggest that maybe we are also obsessed with unhappiness and have the
tendency to find something wrong. This may be the case for some, but I don’t think that can be
    applied to all.
Personally I know when I am happy and recognize it, I am happiest when I travel, learn,
and try new things. This is why I try to break up the monotony, go somewhere new, try
something I’ve never experienced, and really savior the moment as well as the memory.
Although traveling to places I am familiar with brings me happiness too, for example I am from
Belize and when I go back home I know I am the happiest their. I recognize and realize I am
    happy their and I don’t cease to be happy because of it; on the contrary I accept and appreciate;
the happiness it brings me to be back in Belize. I enjoy being back home with my family, friends,
the food, culture, beautiful scenery, music, weather; I feel at peace , I feel like my complete self,
and like there is a place in the world for me.
My happiness isn’t for scientists, scholars, therapist, or random people to define, and nor
is anyone else’s. Making statements like “We cease to being happy the instance we realize we’re
happy.” Is so board and can’t truly be proven, I mean unless you could do a controlled,
consistent, study or experiment on every single person in the world – but that would be
impossible and subjective. How would you even begin to define happiness for the whole world,
would you consider culture, would you really access all populations or just base happiness on
dominate cultures perceptions? After their findings, then what? Would they strive to bring
happiness to the unhappy, would they define the characteristics of happy people, or only consider
those who are oblivious to their emotions, actions, reactions as those who are happy? I’m sure
most of us have heard it before, but maybe the key to happiness is to BE HAPPY, and stop trying
to define your happiness and or others happiness on the basis of what we have been told
happiness is, or what you should want and do to be happy, or who you should be like to be
happy. Just be happy, accept it, express gratitude to those who make you happy, for things you
are thankful for, for what you recognize brings you happiness, to your happiest moments,
acknowledge when others are happy and appreciate the joys of life – express and define happiness however you like and be that, live that, or accept who you are and what you have already that makes your life full or worth being happy about. It really doesn’t have to be as
complex and confusing as people make it.

The general argument made by Seligman is that his goal was to make trouble people happy. More specially, Seligman argues that if they successfully remove depression, anger, and anxiety that will not make people happier. In this passage, Seligman is suggesting that there should be an equally thorough study of strengths and virtues; and that they should work towards developing interventions that can help people become lastingly happier. In conclusion, Seligman’s belief is that more studies should be done, and what studies can lead to happiness.

In my view, Seligman is right. I believe all these experiments he is doing is helping people a lot. Seligman is helping thousands of people in the world maybe millions. Its something to think about, and its also interesting. Who got time to do all these experiments and studies just feel happy again. These people must be really depress and sad inside. Therefore, I conclude that, Seligman is right and doing a good thing to create experiments for these people.

The general argument made by Douglas Preston, talking about his ski trip or his visit to Santa Fe. Is that Dalai Lama is an important person, and Douglas didn’t really understood that. More specially, Douglas argued that he didn’t really want to guide Dalai Lama. He needed the money so he did it anyway. In this passage, Douglas is learning from Dalai. Douglas is realizing that guiding Dalai isn’t so bad and learning how Dalai moves is interesting to him. In conclusion, Douglas belief is that, Dalai is really an important person and felt like he shouldn’t have been such a jerk at first.

In my view, I don’t blame how Douglas reacted at first. I would probably feel a certain way too if I had to guide a monk who don’t speak English that well. More specially, I believe that Dalai Lama is a really smart man. Who is very discipline and humble. I liked when he answered that girls question. It something to think about, what makes true happiness.  Therefore I conclude that, Dalai Lama is a really wise man and you can learn so much from him.

The general argument made by the author, Mark Kingwell. In his work he talks about what is happiness, what is the definition of happiness.  More specially, Mark argue that happiness has more than one definition. Happiness means more than one thing it isn’t just one sentence. In this passage, Mark is suggesting that. Only way you can be happy if you find yourself unhappy. Then you will find happiness. In conclusion, Mark belief is that happiness comes in different forms and there isn’t one meaning to happiness.

In my view, Mark is right. He explains a lot of stuff in the article and breaks down everything right. More specifically, I believe happiness comes in different forms. Money doesn’t make everybody happy, free education doesn’t make everybody happy. Getting everything you want doesn’t complete you. Maybe for some people money is everything or whatever, but money doesn’t bring happiness for everybody. Therefore I conclude that mark is right about everything in my opinion. I agree with a lot of stuff in the article and happiness is to each own and comes in different forms.

The general argument made by the author, Lynne Mcfall about pig happiness. Is that are people really happy. More specially, Lynne argues that are people really satisfied with who they are. Do people really feel happy about their lives. In this passage, Lynne is suggesting that we take another look about happiness. Just because they don’t meet our standards for happiness doesn’t mean they aren’t happy. In conclusion, Lynne belief is that it don’t matter what you do or who you are. If you are comfortable with what you do and it makes you happy, then you are truly happy.

In my view, Lynne is right. A lot of people are happy in different ways I wouldn’t understand. More specially, you got people who likes to steal, who likes to kill, who likes to fight. There are people who are in open relationships, I don’t understand how people are happy or okay with situations like this. Therefore, I conclude that I agree with Lynne. Most people are happy with who they are and sometimes we will never understand it.

The general argument made by the author, Dave Stuart Jr. In his work he wants to require students to use an argumentative template. he wants students to use them, he feels like this would be a good way for students to generate a better argument. More specially, Dave argues that the template actually works. Dave continues to brag about his students becoming more confident in responses to arguments in articles. In this passage, Dave suggests that every student uses this template. Students will have a stronger argument and have a better understanding what to argue about. In conclusion, Dave belief is that every student should use this template. The passage I read he said that “I’m seeking to help them build a neural network of argumentative moves that, once unleashed in later courses that offer less scaffolding, will serve them well.” and that is his goal for all his students to achieve.

In my view, Dave is right. A lot of students don’t know how to write or respond to a argument. More specially, I believe that it can help you to write out an argument. Some people don’t know how to start it off or where to start. The template does just that and helps you. Some students probably don’t need it, although, Dave might object that. I don’t know how he thinks, he probably believes every student should use these types of templates to be better at their arguments. I maintain that he is right about the templates and it is very useful. Therefore, I conclude that the templates are the best way to go.

The general argument made by author Dan Cadman, in his work about illegal aliens voting is that. Illinois is coming out with a program for illegal immigrants to vote, not federally at least , but the immigrants might think otherwise. Immigrants might take advantage and still use this program to vote. More specifically, Dan Cadman argues that Immigrants shouldn’t vote at all. Illinois shouldn’t even make it acceptable for immigrants to vote . In this passage, Dan Cadman is suggesting that the Federal Officials, or U.S Attorney Generals step in and take action. In conclusion, Dan Cadman belief is that immigrants shouldn’t vote at all. even if they are legal immigrants.

In my view, Dan Cadman is wrong, I feel like technically we are all immigrants. I believe there should be certain rules and relegations. Everybody deserves a chance to be apart of something. If an immigrant is living in the U.S, he/she should have the right to be apart of something better. Voting should be apart of it, what is the big deal about them voting or not. Although, Dan Cadman might object that I am wrong and that immigrants voting isn’t right. I maintain that, Dan Cadman is wrong. Immigrants should have the right to vote, they shouldn’t have to go through all this nonsense just to vote. I still believe there should be certain rules and ways to do stuff regarding immigrants, but nothing too drastic. Therefore, I conclude that immigrants should vote and we shouldn’t treat them lower than us and act like they don’t have a say or so.
